What is PSAT

It's a standardized test that provides firsthand practice for the SAT®.

The PSAT measures:

Critical reading skills
Math problem-solving skills
Writing skills

You have developed these skills over many years, both in and out of school. This test doesn't require you to recall specific facts from your classes.

Why do we take the PSAT

The most common reasons for taking the PSAT are to:

1. Receive feedback on your strengths and weaknesses on skills necessary for college study. You can then focus your preparation on those areas that could most benefit from additional study or practice.
2. See how your performance on an admissions test might compare with that of others applying to college.
3. Enter the competition for scholarships from NMSC (grade 11).
4. Help prepare for the SAT. You can become familiar with the kinds of questions and the exact directions you will see on the SAT.
5. Receive information from colleges when you check "yes" to Student Search Service.

How to read the results of the PSAT

What is SAT

Created by The College Board, the SAT is an entrance exam used by most colleges and universities to make admissions decisions. The idea (in theory, at least) is to provide colleges with one common criterion that can be used to compare all applicants. However, it is just one factor in the admissions decision. Schools also consider your high school GPA, academic transcript, letters of recommendation, interviews and personal essays. The weight placed on SAT scores varies from school to school.

1. There are three SAT (Reasoning Test) sections: Math, Critical Reading and Writing. The Writing section requires test takers to complete an essay that is factored into the final score. Start to finish, the test will take you three hours and 45 minutes.
2. SAT (Subject Test) covers the content of many subject areas one hour exam each and is required or some universities.
